Justice in Meltdown

Justice in Meltdown Parliamentary Event

6th July 2011

Union members from across the Justice Sector packed into the Jubilee Room in Westminster Hall on Wednesday 6th July to explain to parliamentarians just what the impact of the planned cuts to Probation, Prisons, the Courts and the Police will mean in their constituencies.

The unique briefing meeting, organised jointly by justice unions, the Police Federation and the Justice Unions’ Parliamentary Group is the start of the fight back against the cuts. The meeting was chaired by Elfyn Llwyd MP and over 20 MPs and Peers turned out to hear Norina O’Hare (PCS) Glyn Travis (POA), Julie Nesbitt (Police Federation) and Napo’s Harry Fletcher explain the scale and consequences of the cuts.  Harry Fletcher said: “It is fantastic to see the four organisations working together: This is the start of a unified campaign across the criminal justice system.  It is just the beginning”.

There were also supportive speeches from a number of MPs including Shadow Justice Secretary, Sadiq Khan, Shadow Home Office Minister, Gerry Sutcliffe, Shadow Youth Justice Minister, Andy Slaughter, Lord Macllennan and John McDonnell, Secretary of the Justice Unions’ Group.

There were over 200 mentions of the event in the national and local media.  In the afternoon, individual Napo members lobbied their constituency MPs.

The meeting also saw the launch of a joint briefing Criminal Justice in Meltdown which details the affects of the cuts across the CJS and the dangers of privatisation, payment by results and cuts to legal aid.  This will be circulated to MPs, the press. Copies will be available from branches shortly.
