Veterans in the CJS
Napo is campainging about the number of and lack of support for ex-armed services personnel caught up in the criminal justice system. Napo, and many Services organisations, believe that not enough is being done to divert veterans to relevant advice, welfare and counselling services.
Research undertaken by Napo in 2009 suggested that there are between 10,000 and 20,000 former Services personnel currently in the criminal justice system in prison or on probation or parole.
As a consequence of the overwhelming problems identified in 2009, we set up a Veterans’ Group in parliament, under the stewardship of Elfyn Llwyd. There are about 25 organisations who are members of that group. In 2011 we produced national action plan, calling specifically for a ministerial appointment in the Cabinet Office, with responsibility for veterans/veterans in the community affairs. This has the support of many parliamentarians and we are currently continuing to campaign.
