Good to hear that Fyrewalker :-)

I can understand the frustration that you're experiencing at the moment but don't lose heart!

Jon, I stand corrected and sincerely offer my apologies to my non-TPO colleagues who attended the Gala and supported NAPO's efforts on that day. I had not been aware that anyone else had attended and it's done my heart and my morale a lot of good to know of that support.

Fyrewalker - I'm sorry to hear your observations about the Durham Miners Gala event. I certainly don't want to detract from the huge amount of hard work that TPO colleagues put into this event but I think its only fair (and important!) to say that this was matched by efforts in person on the day by Napo colleagues of varying different grades from PSO up over.

As with any event, a few more people on the coal face (coal face... miners gala... get it?! ah, I'll get me coat :p) would've been good to see but in all honesty, those people who attended I think did Napo proud.

I attended the Durham Miner's Gala recently to help NAPO collect signatures from the public to support our petition against the cuts to the probation service...apart from our union rep who had organised the petition, the only people I am aware of that helped out were us TPO's...speaks volumes to me.

Dodo - I'm sure if I had suggested this I would've got another earful of abuse. If the member can spend so much time on training why can't he spend any time on the union? He spends plenty of time moaning about the union - an hour a week helping with the union would make an actual difference.

Perhaps you should have advised the 'member'(an apt adjective) as follows - "Just do one hours study then."

It's amazing how intelligent and educated colleagues seem to fail to understand the basis of a union isn't it!

I know it's a bit trite, but I think we just need to tell them "if you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the problem".

What astounds me even more is that the people who shout loudest about the union doing 'nothing' seem to be the first to call for representation and the most frequent to access assistance and guidance...

Yes, my thoughts exactly, Pipling! Thing is, I don't want to get caught in the trap of whinging about members' whinging! I'd much rather they fought for their rights and supported their union properly by getting more involved.

Being involved in the union regularly feels like a thankless task, but to be told by someone who's "been part of union since before you were born" that Napo doesn't do anything...Wow! That takes ingratitude to a new level. I'd much rather that someone with that apparent experience of being in a union would use it to benefit Napo, rather than rubbish it and at the same time demand that it act in their interests. It really frustrates me that people have this "I pay my subs so I don't have to do anything" attitude. I don't get paid for being active in the union and I don't see myself as a martyr - being involved in the union is just common sense to me. If I want things to change for the better/keep what we have, I'll be part of the efforts to achieve that - it's laziness and complacency to think that things like workers' rights will simply fall into your lap.

Whinge/rant over!

Welcome to the Probation Service!

Most people like a winge but when it comes to doing something....
Its a shame because if the work force was more unified and active management would be tested more. I guess most people choose to do other things with their time though.

A colleague/member asked me to challenge our management about their decision regarding hours accrued whilst on training. Management will only pay for one hour's study per night, even if you happen to be slogging away until 2am.

I spoke to management about this and its position remained the same. I told my colleague/member and they appeared to be satisfied that I had taken up their complaint...Until weeks later, when they moaned that Napo is useless and doesn't speak up for its members.

MEMBER: I want to be paid for the hours I have worked.

ME: I spoke to management; they wouldn't budge.

MEMBER: The union is useless...

ME: Why don't you get more involved then?

MEMBER: I pay my subs so I shouldn't have to get more involved.
