Sadly, with a daughter at uni, "somewhere nice" comprises mostly "my own back garden!" However I do live in a particularly nice part of the world so the local beach could be high on the agenda - weather permitting! I look forward to reading all the nice new threads when I get back - I have absolutely no intention of accessing this site in my own time!

I'm off on holiday for three weeks now. If this thread is still going by the time I get back, I'll personally come round to all your desks and give you a slap with a week old mackerel!

Because the virus isn't a standard "human" flu virus

say spanish flu - that's a "human" flu that mutated in spain, making it more virulant/contagious

whereas, Swine flu (or Pig Death as my friends are calling it) was a Porcine flu virus, that mutated so it could be passed from human-to-human

Bird Flu was similar - but the mutation was less serious. a bird could pass bird-flu to a human, but once that human had it it wasn't possible for them to pass the virus onto a third party

Do do get animal versions of a lot of human illnesses, that are similar - FIV (also known as Cat-AIDS) is one example. loads of cats have it, but can't pass it to humans as the virus is JUST different enough to not "work" on humans

you should remember, ask me when you have a science question!

A serious question here,

Why isn't it called Mexican Flu? We've previously had epidemics of Spanish Flu, Hong Kong Flu and Asian Flu, so why not Mexican Flu?

Just wondering if anyone knew.

Don't mention German Measles. I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it.

Duende and Zog I was merely jesting and japeing, as were my Muslim colleagues. Albeit I am aware of 1 Muslim colleague who doesnt even say the word pig but says p.i.g and spells it every time.

Now thats following religion to the extreme isnt it. Its merely a word and not actually a porkie little pink animal that grunts and eats NOMs policies......errr I mean eats..........

Pulp I just can't imagine how the name Swine Flu could conflict with ones religious beliefs. It's not like you look at a menu of diseases and say "I'll have the Malaria. That Swine Flu's against my religion."

If anything everybody's a bit more anti-porcine these days. If I had a religious aversion to pigs I'd say swine flu fits in nicely with this world view.

Like the quote Zog! Made me laugh.

Pulp, seriously, weeks ago a Rabbi was stating that the common use of the term 'swine flu' was inappropriate for Jews or muslims to use considering that pigs are forbidden meats. A negative consquence of this BS was that Coptic Egyptians (who eat pork) accused the muslim majority of using this as a means to further persecute them by brandishing the Copts as likely carriers of N1H1. Which just goes to show how some will go to desperate lengths to antagonise their neighbours. Having said that, I do not recall many jumping to the defense of vegetarian Hindus when bird flu was the disease du jour. In the words of Woody Allen (aka Shakespeare) : 'TB or not TB; that is the consumption.'

Spanish Flu killed over 30 million mostly young healthy adults in two years so perhaps a more dangerous strain would be just a *little* frightening. Does Swine Flu indicate that? No. Could this happen at any time to any strain of Flu? Yes.

It's completely hyped, sorry to state the bleeding obvious. More than anything, it's premature. Swine flu is no more virulent than any other strain and when was the last time we had a worldwide panic about seasonal flu?

Always look on the bright side of life. That's I say. But I don't suppose that sells newspapers..
