No it was a retrial, this bloke has cost a lot of money and wasted time. The whole thing is ludicrous!

Yes typical of Medja to pick up on lawyer's stupidity.

This case has had a lot of publicity in the Eastern Counties.

He had a weapon, there was no likelihood of him using it, I cannot remember details but will try to find a link. He was sentenced initially as if he was likely to supply a weapon to an armed robber.

There is another local case getting much attention.

Two young men extradited to Cyprus apparently initially having been acquitted of manslaughter, allegedly they were rear seat passengers in a car whose driver caused the death of a scooterist.

Subsequently there was a prosecution appeal, overturning initial verdict and convicting them in their absence with a sentence immediate custody. Hopefully they will at least have a chance of an appeal once they get to Cyprus. It will not be popular in Witham, Essex, but as parliamentary seat has already gone Tory, I doubt Labour Ministers have much interest in really getting involved as outcome will not save them a parliamentary seat.

Treaties apparently do not allow UK court to consider plausibility of initial conviction and sentence and Government Minister concerned has refused to intervene and they are apparently off to Cypriot chokey tomorrow, amidst much indignation about European Legislation which I doubt is any way involved.
