Hi Tolkny,

I think it is your memory that is at fault regarding prison riots. See below:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1026508/Robocop-prison-squad-called-riot s-flare-immigrant-centre.html

This final link is my favourite from 1993 as it discusses fears of riots as prison numbers soar. If only we had realised those were the good old days.

Thanks for that. 51 weeks maximum, it used to be so simple with a lot of multiples of 7.

Now Jack is electioneering with a promise of murder with a weapon getting a minimum 25 years.

One would think he has learned nothing about sentencing since he came to office, although I suppose it shows how desperate he is to try to stop losing a few more Labour seats, a bit like Howard was with the rushed through sexual offenders stuff just before the '97 election on top of abolishing our training.

I suppose not much will change till there are more prison riots, the last being early 90's I think and not in recent memory.

I remember in about '84 facing down Leon Brittan at some speech making thingy (NACRO AGM I think _ David Matheson was there, I had recently moved from God's Holy City to the land of the shell suit)when he had just announced minimums of 5 years for certain drugs and weapons offences, at the same time as they let about 2 or 3 thousand out by reducing some shorter sentences. Leon just fobbed me off the way Jack did when at a similar do he bragged about doubling the number of prisoners doing ETS at a prison I worked. I said that meant only 950 odd weren't doing the course now instead of 960!! They just don't care as long as they get elected.

Tolks - I stand to be corrected but......I think it looks like 28 weeks imprisonment for a single offence up to a max of 51 weeks for multiple offences with 2 yrs operational period. This is of course nonsense, given that I have at least three offenders on 12 month (52 week) terms of imprisonment and just goes to show that the whole 2003 act is so complicated even the judges don't know what's going on half the time.

What is the maximum Suspended Sentence a Crown Court can hand down and the maximum operational period, please?

I am too far out of touch to know definitively and despite Internet searches I cannot find it as quickly as I hoped, although the details for Victoria Australia are easy to locate!! In fact I gave an Australian website as a reference and have much egg on my face, here.
