Women in Napo - News
Report to Feb 2012 NEC - Women's Strategy Progress So Far
31st January 2012 - Napo has regular updates from the TUC Women’s Officer, Scarlet Harris. The most recent correspondence included the following:
- CSA vote – some good news for a change
Many of you will have heard the good news earlier this week that House of Lords voted overwhelmingly against government proposals to charge single parents to use the Child Support Agency.
Support for an amendment came from all parties.
These unfair proposals appeared to be part of a trend to persecute and stigmatise single mothers.
- Lone Parent Obligations and the Welfare Reform Bill – another piece of good news
The TUC wrote to Lord Freud, the Minister for Welfare Reform, prior to Monday’s debate calling on the UK Government to accept amendments to the proposals on Lone Parent Obligations and the provision of childcare for single parents being forced into the JSA system.
In response to this, Lord Freud, made a number of important commitments/concessions during Monday's Report Stage proceedings. The main commitment/concession is that the UK Government will introduce specific safeguards in regulations to ensure that the DWP, Job Centre Plus staff and advisers: “will take childcare responsibilities into account when setting work-related requirements”.
The Minister also confirmed that: “Regulations will prescribe that claimants with a child under 13 will be able to limit their work search to jobs that fit around their children's school hours. This is key. The best way to prevent the inappropriate application of sanctions is to ensure that requirements are reasonable in the first instance”.
